GTA 6 modding: what we know about mods on GTA VI

Short answer: not at launch. Grand Theft Auto VI releases first on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and consoles don't support mods. GTA modding has always lived on PC, and a PC version of GTA 6 has not been officially confirmed yet. So real GTA 6 mods are still some way off, but history tells us they're coming. If you can't wait, modders are already rebuilding GTA 6's map inside GTA 5 on PC.

Can you mod GTA 6 on PS5 or Xbox?
No. Consoles are closed platforms: you can't install third-party files or hook into the game the way PC mods do. Neither Rockstar nor Sony or Microsoft allow it. If you're playing GTA 6 on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, there will be no mods, the same way GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 were never moddable on console.
Will GTA 6 get mods on PC?
Almost certainly, if and when a PC version arrives. Rockstar hasn't officially confirmed a GTA 6 PC release, but one is widely expected some time after the console launch, following the studio's usual pattern. When GTA 6 hits PC, expect a modding scene to follow, exactly as it did (massively) with GTA V: script hooks, trainers, and car, map, weapon and character mods.
Rockstar's stance on mods
Historically, Rockstar has been broadly tolerant of single-player mods on PC while cracking down hard on anything that touches GTA Online. Cheats, mod menus and trainers used online get accounts banned. The safe expectation for GTA 6 is the same: single-player modding largely left alone, online modding a bannable offence.
Rockstar's published policy permits non-commercial single-player PC mods that respect third-party intellectual property, and the studio has said it has not banned anyone for single-player mods. The line it enforces is GTA Online — and it enforces it hard.
No, "official GTA 6 mod support" has not been announced
In January 2026 Rockstar launched the Cfx Marketplace — it went live on 12 January 2026 — and a wave of headlines turned that into "GTA 6 is getting official mod support". That is not what happened. The Cfx Marketplace is a curated storefront where FiveM and RedM creators sell their work, and FiveM and RedM are the multiplayer modding frameworks for GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 — not for GTA 6. About Grand Theft Auto VI itself, Rockstar has said nothing at all.
The signal underneath the bad headline is still worth having. Rockstar bought Cfx.re — the team behind FiveM and RedM — back in August 2023, and it now runs an official, curated and monetised storefront for community-made content in its own games. That tells you which way the studio is leaning. It is not a confirmation, and anyone selling it to you as one is guessing.
When will GTA 6 mods realistically arrive?
Put the pieces together and the honest answer is: not before a PC version exists. GTA 6 launches on 19 November 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only, consoles cannot run mods, and Rockstar has not announced a PC release — let alone dated one. Until that changes, anything advertised as a "GTA 6 mod download" is, by definition, not a GTA 6 mod.
Is modding GTA 6 safe? Will you get banned?
- Single-player mods (PC): generally fine, but only install mods from trusted, human-reviewed sources, and never a random "GTA 6 APK" or "free download" for console (those are scams).
- Online mods / cheats: a ban risk. Keep modding to single-player.
- Console: not possible at all.
What to expect when GTA 6 modding arrives
Based on GTA V, the first waves usually include modding tools (a script hook), trainers and mod menus for single-player, then vehicles, maps and character models. At GTA6 Cartel we're building the mod categories now so the community has a safe, human-reviewed home for GTA 6 mods the day they're possible.
