How to install mods on GTA 5 Enhanced: the 2026 toolchain, step by step

Updated: 18 July 2026.
GTA 5 Enhanced uses its own executable, its own asset format and its own builds of the core modding tools, so a guide written for the classic version of the game will walk you straight into a crash. This is the current, working route to a modded Enhanced install, tool by tool.
The short version
- Install the Enhanced build of Script Hook V (the classic one will not attach).
- Add Script Hook V .NET Enhanced (SHVDNE) if you want .NET script mods and trainers.
- For archive edits, use a community patch such as OpenIV Fix, ZEnhanced or OpenRPF, because OpenIV still has no official Enhanced support.
- Install one mod at a time and check its edition tag before you download.
Before you start
You need a legitimate copy of GTA 5 Enhanced on PC, which runs from its own executable (GTA5_Enhanced.exe) and is listed by the stores as a separate title from the classic build. Keep one rule in mind from the first minute: mods are for single player only. Loading any of this into GTA Online risks a ban, so many players keep a clean copy for online and a modded one for story mode.
It also pays to know which build each mod targets. Since the scene split, every mod in our GTA 5 Enhanced mods section is tagged for the edition it is confirmed on, which removes the main source of failed installs before it happens.
Step 1: Script Hook V for Enhanced
Script Hook V is the base layer that lets script mods talk to the game, and the part most guides get wrong: the Enhanced release needs the Enhanced build of Script Hook V, distributed by the original author alongside the classic one. It ships with an asi loader (dinput8.dll); both go into the game folder next to the executable.
One behaviour to expect: every Rockstar patch changes the executable, which breaks Script Hook V until its author updates it. In 2026 those updates have been landing within days, so when your scripts stop loading after a patch, the fix is usually patience rather than reinstalling everything.
Step 2: SHVDNE for .NET mods
Most gameplay mods and trainers are written in C# and need Script Hook V .NET. On Enhanced that layer is Script Hook V .NET Enhanced (SHVDNE), a community port that runs most .NET scripts written for the classic build without changes. If a mod ships a .dll and its page mentions SHVDN, this is the piece you need on Enhanced.
Step 3: archive edits without official OpenIV
OpenIV, the archive editor a decade of tutorials is built on, still has no official Enhanced support: it does not recognise the Enhanced executable. The community covers the gap three ways: OpenIV Fix (points OpenIV at a renamed copy of the exe), ZEnhanced and OpenRPF (an OpenIV.asi replacement that makes the mods folder work on Enhanced). Which one you need depends on the mod, and each mod page in our GTA 5 tools section states what it expects.
The mods folder matters more than it sounds: it keeps your edits in a copy of the game archives instead of the originals, so an update or a bad file never forces a full reinstall.
Installing an add-on car
Add-on vehicles are the most common first mod, and the flow is the same on Enhanced once the tools above are in place: drop the mod's folder into dlcpacks, register it in dlclist.xml, and spawn the car by its model name with a trainer. The catch specific to Enhanced is the asset format: the game moved to newer Gen9 assets, so a car built only for the classic build can crash on startup. Check the edition tag first; every car in our GTA 5 mods catalogue carries one.
Steam, Epic or Rockstar launcher
The store you bought the game on only changes where the game folder lives. Find the install directory from your launcher's settings, and every step above happens inside that folder. Nothing else in the process differs between stores.
When something breaks
Crashes on startup, scripts that silently stop loading and the Script Hook V critical error all have known causes, and almost all of them come down to a version mismatch somewhere in the chain. We keep a dedicated guide to GTA 5 Enhanced mods that stop working with the fix for each symptom.
What to watch
Two things will keep changing this setup. Rockstar patches will keep briefly breaking Script Hook V until it updates, and FiveM reaches GTA V Enhanced on 21 July 2026 in Early Access, which brings custom multiplayer servers to the new build through its own launcher. That side of modding is a different world from the single-player setup above; we cover it in our FiveM for GTA V Enhanced guide. If you are still weighing which build to mod at all, start with Legacy vs Enhanced.
