Take-Two calls GTA 6 pre-orders exceptional and gives no number

Take-Two closed the June quarter with $1.39 billion in net bookings, down 3 percent from a year earlier, in its first earnings report since GTA 6 pre-orders opened on 25 June. The results went out on Friday 7 August before the market opened, hours ahead of an 8 AM ET call with analysts. The release date is locked again, the full-year outlook is intact, and the pre-order figure the entire industry wanted to see is nowhere in the document.
The one sentence Strauss Zelnick spends on the game says plenty without counting anything: "With these positive trends and excitement around the November 19th launch of Grand Theft Auto VI, we are reiterating our Fiscal 2027 Net Bookings outlook of $8.0 to $8.2 billion."
GTA 6 pre-order numbers: what Take-Two has actually said
There is no official pre-order figure for GTA 6. The quarter Take-Two just reported ran through 30 June, so its window covered the first six days of pre-orders, and the report still puts no number on them. The company's own quarterly materials describe an "exceptional start to pre-orders", as GamesBeat reported from the earnings documents. That adjective is the entire official record.
On the call itself, Strauss Zelnick went as far as the company was willing to go. "I can say that the level of pre-orders is unprecedented and astonishing, and we're very grateful for that," he told analysts, before closing the door on a figure: "they are so unprecedented that we just don't know how it'll translate into sales. We genuinely don't, and we just don't believe in claiming victory before it occurs." He also defended the $80 standard price, arguing that game pricing has not kept pace with inflation, and confirmed the discless launch by describing a business that is "well over 90 percent digitally distributed", with physical editions compared to vinyl records.
The silence fits how Rockstar's parent has always handled this franchise. Sales milestones arrive when the company wants a headline, usually after launch, in round numbers. GTA V's figures were announced at 1 billion dollars in three days; nobody outside the building saw the running tally before that. Withholding the pre-order count keeps that first headline unspent while the game is still fifteen weeks out.
What the June quarter actually reported
| Metric | Figure |
|---|---|
| Net bookings, Q1 FY27 (April to June 2026) | $1.39 billion, down 3% year over year |
| GAAP net revenue | $1.53 billion |
| Q2 outlook (July to September) | $1.62 to $1.67 billion in net bookings |
| Fiscal 2027 outlook, reiterated | $8.0 to $8.2 billion in net bookings |
| GTA 6 release date | 19 November 2026, reaffirmed |
The release lists the Grand Theft Auto series among the quarter's largest contributors, alongside NBA 2K and Zynga's mobile catalog. The 3 percent dip drew no alarm from the company; the quarter came in ahead of its own revenue guidance, and the year it keeps promising is the one that starts on 19 November.

The $8 billion year is the real pre-order statement
Take-Two set its $8.0 to $8.2 billion outlook in May, when it reaffirmed the November date after the delay from May 2026. That range is roughly 20 percent above what the company just booked across fiscal 2026, and a step of that size exists in the plan for exactly one reason. Reiterating it now, with six days of real pre-order data in hand and the word exceptional in its materials, is the closest thing to a verdict on June that Take-Two was willing to print.
Read it the other way and it says as much: a company that had seen weak pre-orders would not walk into its first post-pre-order call repeating the most aggressive outlook in its history.
The estimates filling the vacuum
Without an official count, third-party estimates are all anyone has. Newzoo, the market research firm, estimated around $260 million in worldwide digital pre-order spending across the opening days, roughly $180 million of it in the United States and five major European markets, and called it the strongest opening week of pre-orders in its dataset. In coverage of today's results the same firm's projection for launch put GTA 6 above $3.25 billion in first-week sales. Those are estimates, built on panel data, and Take-Two has confirmed none of them.
The vacuum has a track record of breeding worse numbers. In June a supposed 50 million pre-order figure went viral before falling apart under the first honest look; we took that one apart at the time. Every week without an official figure is a week fabricated ones will keep filling, which is worth remembering whenever the next screenshot with a huge number starts circulating.
A Friday morning slot and a Netflix date the day before
Two calendar details around this report are worth keeping. Take-Two usually reports on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday after the market closes; this one landed on a Friday before the open, a slot it almost never uses, with the first pre-order commentary in hand. And it arrived one day after Rockstar dated Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look for 27 August on Netflix, repeating a pattern from November 2023, when Trailer 1 was announced on an earnings day. Nothing ties the scheduling together officially. The company simply keeps arranging its calendar so that GTA 6 news and investor news arrive holding hands.
When a real number could arrive
Take-Two committed to nothing on that front. The natural windows are visible anyway: the next quarterly report lands in early November, about two weeks before launch, and would be the last chance to brief investors on pre-orders before the game ships. Rockstar's own launch communications are the other candidate, and Zelnick's press rounds on earnings days have a history of shaking loose details the releases omit. The editions on sale since June run from the standard game to the Vice City collector tiers, so any eventual figure will carry a wide range of price points inside it.
Until one of those windows opens, the record stands as of today: pre-orders described as exceptional, a reiterated $8 billion year, and a 19 November date that has now survived every report since the delay. This page will be updated when a real number exists.
