The Kortz Center in GTA 5: where it is, the real building it copies, and everything that happens there

Updated: 11 July 2026.
The Kortz Center has been sitting in the north-west corner of Los Santos since 2013, and for most of that time it was just a nice place to crash a helicopter. On 14 July 2026 it becomes the target of GTA Online's Kortz Center Heist — so here is the building itself: where it is, the real museum it copies, and everything Rockstar has staged there over thirteen years.
Where is the Kortz Center in GTA 5?
The Kortz Center is on Kortz Drive, in Pacific Bluffs, at the north-western edge of Los Santos, up on the bluffs above the coast. You drive in from Kortz Drive itself, and there is also a footpath up to the complex from West Eclipse Boulevard.
It is one of the few landmarks in the game that you have to make a deliberate trip to reach. Nothing routes you past it — which is exactly why so many players have never set foot in the place despite putting hundreds of hours into Los Santos.
What the Kortz Center actually is
It is a cultural complex: research institutes, foundations and museum galleries spread across a hilltop campus. In the game's fiction it is made up of four buildings, and each one is lifted from a specific part of the real museum it is based on.
| Building in GTA V | What it is based on |
|---|---|
| Low Rotunda | The Getty Center's Entrance Hall |
| Bell Building | The North and East Pavilions |
| Biranda Building | The West Pavilion |
| Moseley Building | The Special Exhibitions Pavilion |
The Kortz Center Heist update also adds something new to the campus: a skylight on the Bell Building that was not there before. Worth knowing if you are about to spend a lot of time looking for a way in.
What real building is the Kortz Center based on?
The Getty Center in Brentwood, Los Angeles — the hilltop museum complex designed by Richard Meier that opened in 1997, all white travertine, sharp geometry and a view straight down over the 405.

The copy is unusually faithful, and it is split in a specific way. The circular architecture and the entrance parking lot come from the Getty Research Institute, the round building on the real campus. The rest of the complex — the pavilions, the courtyards, the stone — comes from the J. Paul Getty Museum itself.
The one place Rockstar took liberties is the hedge labyrinth. It is loosely based on the Getty's Central Garden, except the real garden is a spiralling walk through planting, not a maze you can get lost in. Rockstar turned a garden into a puzzle.
The Wrap Up: the mission everyone remembers
If you know the Kortz Center at all, you know it from "The Wrap Up". Michael goes up there to meet his FIB handlers — Dave Norton, Steve Haines and Andreas Sanchez — and the meeting turns into one of the ugliest four-way shootouts in the game: Michael in the middle, IAA agents on one side, FIB on the other, and Merryweather turning up to shoot at everybody.
Then Trevor, watching from a rooftop with a rifle, puts a round into a Merryweather Buzzard. The helicopter comes down into the courtyard and lands in the fountain.
And it stays there. The wreck is still sitting in that fountain for the rest of your save — one of the few permanent scars GTA V's story leaves on the map. Thirteen years later, Rockstar is inviting you back to the same courtyard, this time with a camera and a plan.
Can you go inside the Kortz Center?
Not freely, no. The galleries are not an open interior you can wander around the way you can a convenience store. The campus itself is walkable, but after closing hours it is patrolled: get spotted by the security guards and you pick up a one-star wanted level for your trouble.
That changes with the Heist, which is the whole point of it. Scoping the place out in free roam — walking the galleries, photographing the paintings without tripping security — is the first thing the job asks you to do.
The Letter Scrap in the hedge maze
The hedge labyrinth at the Kortz Center is not just scenery. One of GTA V's Letter Scraps — the collectible pages of the Leonora Johnson murder confession — is hidden inside it. If you are running the collectible hunt, this is one of the fiddlier ones to reach, purely because the maze does what mazes do.
The signal jammer on the Low Rotunda
In GTA Online, the Kortz Center holds one of the 50 signal jammers scattered around the map. It sits on top of the Low Rotunda, mounted on the "O" of the Kortz sign facing the inner yard — which is why people search for it: it is one of the more awkward ones to spot from the ground.
Destroying all 50 unlocks Avi Schwartzman as a hacker for The Diamond Casino Heist, and he is the best one in the game. Skipping this jammer means doing the whole hunt again.
Everything GTA Online has staged at the Kortz Center
For a location most players ignore, Rockstar keeps sending you back to it. Over the years the Kortz Center has hosted:
- Art to Art — a bike race that runs through the complex.
- Maze — a deathmatch built around the hedge labyrinth. This is what people mean when they search "Kortz Center maze".
- Kortz Survival — a Survival mode staged on the campus.
- Special Cargo steal missions, including the air-drop variant.
- Business Battles — Gruppe Sechs against the Madrazo Cartel.
- Casino Work — the "Fake News" job.
- Exotic Exports and Junk Energy Time Trials.
The high-end cars that spawn in the entrance parking lot — Feltzers, Coquettes, Carbonizzares, the occasional Infernus — are the reason the "Kortz Center parking lot" search exists at all. It is a reliable place to go shopping.
And now: the Kortz Center Heist
On 14 July 2026, the Kortz Center becomes GTA Online's first purpose-built, planning-board Heist since Cayo Perico in December 2020. You case the galleries, photograph the paintings, work with a forger to swap the real canvases for replicas, and get out — cleanly, if you want the art to be worth anything when you fence it.

Hosting it needs a Mansion with the new Art Studio expansion; joining someone else's does not. We have the full breakdown — what Rockstar confirmed, what it did not, and the free GTA$1,500,000 on the table before 13 July — in our Kortz Center Heist guide.
What to watch
The obvious thing to watch is whether the Heist changes the Kortz Center permanently, the way "The Wrap Up" did. The skylight on the Bell Building is already a physical change to a thirteen-year-old building, and Rockstar is rotating three new paintings into the galleries every week — which means the interior is not a static set piece any more.
