GTA 6 Online: Will There Be Multiplayer, and When?

Updated 10 July 2026. Rockstar has not announced GTA 6 Online. We update this page in place when that changes.
There is no GTA 6 Online at launch. Rockstar describes Grand Theft Auto VI as "a single-player experience" — that is the wording on its own pre-order announcement and in the FAQ on the game's store listings. No multiplayer mode has been announced, and no date exists for one.
That is the honest answer as of today. Below is what Rockstar has actually said, what its own history suggests, and what happens to the GTA Online you are playing right now.
Is GTA 6 multiplayer?
Not at launch. Every official description of Grand Theft Auto VI calls it a single-player experience. The pre-order Newswire post, the platform and editions support article, and the PlayStation Store FAQ all say the same thing, and none of them mentions an online mode.
This is a change of pattern worth noticing. GTA V shipped with GTA Online announced in advance and dated two weeks after launch. For GTA VI, Rockstar has said nothing at all — not "later", not "in development", nothing. Any site giving you a GTA 6 Online release date is inventing it.
Will there be a GTA 6 Online eventually?
Almost certainly, but that is a judgement about Rockstar's business, not a fact it has confirmed. GTA Online has generated recurrent revenue for over a decade and Take-Two has repeatedly told investors that live services are central to its plans. A Grand Theft Auto with no online component would be the first in twenty years.
What the company's own history suggests about timing:
| Game | Launch | Online mode | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto V | 17 September 2013 | GTA Online, 1 October 2013 | 14 days |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | 26 October 2018 | Red Dead Online beta, 27 November 2018 | 32 days |
| Grand Theft Auto VI | 19 November 2026 | Not announced | Unknown |
Read that table carefully. It shows a pattern of weeks, not years — but in both earlier cases the online mode was announced before the game shipped. That announcement has not happened for GTA 6, which is precisely why nobody outside Rockstar can put a date on it.

What happens to the current GTA Online?
Nothing. GTA Online, the multiplayer mode attached to GTA V, keeps running on its own schedule and keeps getting updates. Rockstar has not announced an end date for it, and its content calendar has continued straight through GTA 6's marketing — the Kortz Center Heist arrives on 14 July 2026.
Nor is there any confirmation that your GTA Online character, money or properties transfer anywhere. Rockstar has said nothing about carry-over. When GTA Online launched, nothing carried over from GTA IV's multiplayer either.
Do I need PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass Core for GTA 6?
Not for the single-player game, which is all that ships on 19 November. Console online subscriptions are required for online play, so if and when a GTA 6 online mode arrives, expect the usual requirement to apply. GTA+ — Rockstar's own membership — is included for one month with every GTA 6 pre-order, though what it will offer in GTA 6 has not been detailed.
Will GTA 6 Online come to PC?
There is no PC version of GTA 6 at all yet, online or otherwise. The game launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only, and Rockstar has not announced a PC release — the historical gap and a realistic window are in our is GTA 6 coming to PC guide. Any GTA 6 Online on PC would necessarily come after that.
What to watch
The Rockstar Newswire is where the first concrete online details will appear, as they did for GTA Online and Red Dead Online. Historically the announcement lands close to launch, not months before. Watch for it after the game ships rather than before.
In the meantime: if you intend to play online on day one anywhere, check whether your country will ask you to verify your age first — several already do for online play.
