Is GTA 6 Banned? The 8-Country Story, Debunked

Updated 10 July 2026. This page exists because a misread list became a global headline.
GTA 6 is not banned anywhere. No government has banned it. The "GTA 6 banned in 8 countries" story that spread in June 2026 is a misreading of a PlayStation Store list of territories excluded from the pre-order bonus — the free month of GTA+. It is a promotion eligibility list, not a censorship list.
Here is what the list actually is, country by country, and the single detail that proves it was never about the game's content.
Where the story came from
When pre-orders opened on 25 June 2026, GTA 6's PlayStation Store FAQ listed eight territories where the pre-order GTA+ bonus did not apply: Bahrain, China, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Russia and Taiwan.
Within hours the list was being reported as a ban. TweakTown ran "GTA 6 is apparently already banned in these countries". TechPowerUp published a version that openly admitted the "reason unknown". GamingBible and ComicBook.com escalated it to "over one billion people locked out". Nobody produced a decree, a ministry statement or a rating board decision, because none exists.

What the eight countries actually mean
| Country | What is actually true |
|---|---|
| Bahrain, Qatar, Lebanon | The game is available. They are excluded from the free GTA+ month, which is a Sony promotion. No government ban. |
| Kuwait, Oman | Not listed on the local PlayStation Store, so it cannot be pre-ordered there. No confirmed government ban has been reported. |
| Russia | PlayStation, Xbox and Steam storefronts withdrew from Russia over sanctions in 2022. Nothing to do with GTA 6, and it affects every game. |
| China | Unavailable through China's content-approval system, as most Western open-world games are. There is no GTA 6-specific decree. |
| Taiwan | Excluded from the promotion. The game is not banned. |
The detail that settles it: Saudi Arabia and the UAE
Both countries banned Grand Theft Auto for years on content grounds. Both lifted those bans in 2025, and both have active GTA 6 pre-orders today.
If the eight-country list were about violence, sex or crime, Saudi Arabia and the UAE would have been at the top of it. They are not on it at all. A content ban that excludes the two countries with an actual history of banning GTA is not a content ban.
Has Grand Theft Auto ever really been banned?
Yes, once meaningfully. Thailand banned the series in 2008 after a Bangkok teenager killed a taxi driver and the press connected it to GTA IV. The distributor pulled the game and the government prohibited the franchise. That ban is still in force in 2026, and it is the only long-standing national ban of the series.
Australia and Germany have historically demanded cuts or refused classification for individual GTA titles rather than banning the franchise. That is ratings, not prohibition — a distinction worth keeping straight.
Could GTA 6 still be banned somewhere?
It is possible, in the sense that any rating board can refuse classification, and a refused classification is a de facto ban in countries like Australia. Nothing suggests it is coming: GTA 6 has ratings in the major markets, pre-orders are open, and Rockstar is not shipping anything more extreme than GTA V.
The more realistic friction is age verification, not prohibition. Several countries now require ID or a face scan to play mature games online, which is a real barrier and a real story — we mapped it, country by country, in which countries will ask for ID to play GTA 6.
How to check availability where you live
Open the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store on your own account. If the pre-order page loads and takes payment, GTA 6 is available to you. Storefront listings are the only reliable signal, and they change; a headline from June is not one.
