Rockstar switched off GTA Online's casino in Australia, four months before GTA 6

Players in Australia walked into the Diamond Casino in GTA Online on 28 July 2026 and found every table dead. Blackjack, roulette, three card poker, the slot machines, Inside Track and the Lucky Wheel all stopped responding, and the free daily spin went with them. The building is still open and chips can still be bought and sold at the counter. There is nothing left to bet them on.
Rockstar has not commented. The change was found inside the game's own files by the dataminer Tez2, who surfaced a region flag named Gambling_Restricted_Geographic applied to the AU region, and it spread from there. No Australian regulator announced anything either, which is the part most of the coverage has skipped past.
What stopped working in Australia, and what still works
The restriction is aimed at the act of gambling rather than at the casino as a place. Australians can still walk the floor, still own a penthouse, and still run the casino's story missions.
| Feature | Status in Australia |
|---|---|
| Blackjack, roulette, three card poker, slots | Disabled |
| Inside Track horse betting | Disabled |
| Lucky Wheel and the free daily spin | Disabled |
| Penthouse gambling | Disabled |
| Entering the Diamond Casino building | Works |
| Buying, selling and claiming chips | Works |
| Casino missions and heist content | Works |

The Lucky Wheel is the loss with teeth. It is the only route to the weekly podium vehicle, so Australian accounts are now cut off from a car that everyone else gets a free daily shot at. Poker in Red Dead Online has also been reported as restricted in Australia, though that game has had regional poker blocks since 2019 and the Australian part of it is not as well documented as the GTA Online change.
Australia had the casino for seven years
This is what makes the change worth writing about. When the Diamond Casino and Resort opened in July 2019, Rockstar switched its gambling off in more than 50 countries whose laws would not tolerate it, a list that included Greece, South Korea and Qatar. Australia was not on it. Australians spun the Lucky Wheel for seven years like everyone else.
So nothing about GTA Online changed on 28 July. What changed is the ground it is standing on.
No new gambling law was passed
The framing running through most of the coverage is that Australia banned gambling in GTA Online, or cracked down on it. Australia did neither. There is no new Australian gambling law aimed at video games, no regulator issued a notice to Rockstar, and no minister announced anything. Rockstar switched the feature off on its own.
The rule that actually applies is not about gambling at all. It is about age checks.
The rule that applies: simulated gambling sits in the adults-only tier
Two separate things happened in Australia, and together they box Rockstar in.
The first was on 22 September 2024, when new classification rules took effect. Any video game containing simulated gambling now carries a mandatory minimum classification of R18+, legally restricted to adults. The Classification Board defines simulated gambling as interactive activity that resembles or functions like a real-world gambling service without paying out real money, which is a precise description of the Diamond Casino. Games that merely have a casino as a setting, with imagery you cannot interact with, are explicitly not captured.
The second was on 9 March 2026, when the second tranche of Australia's Phase 2 online safety codes became enforceable. Those codes require services to apply real age assurance before giving access to R18+ material, and they name simulated gambling directly. The codes also close the loophole every game has leaned on for twenty years: the head terms state that self-declaration by the user is not appropriate on its own, so a tick box saying you are over 18 no longer counts. What does count is facial age estimation, credit card checks or photo identification matching. Civil penalties run to A$49.5 million for a company.
Put those together and Rockstar had two options for Australia. Build real age verification into GTA Online, or remove the feature that drags the game into the tier where verification is required. It chose the second one.
Rockstar built an age check and has never switched it on
The most telling detail is that the machinery already exists. Age assurance code was found sitting in GTA Online's files back in August 2025: a "Verify Age" flow with a QR handoff and an "Access Denied, Age Assurance Required" screen, wired to server-side tunables so Rockstar can turn it on per region without shipping an update. As of April 2026 it had never been activated, and it still has not been.
Rockstar has had the switch for a year, the codes have been enforceable since March, and when the moment came the company deleted the casino instead of flipping it. That is a decision about cost and friction. Verifying every Australian adult means handing a face scan or a document to play a game they already own, and Roblox lost roughly 20 million daily users after imposing facial age estimation. Removing a feature costs a server-side flag.
What this means for GTA 6

GTA 6 arrives on 19 November 2026 into exactly this regime, and today Rockstar showed which lever it pulls.
The relevant fact is that a casino is not decoration. Under the September 2024 rules, a nightclub, a bar or a strip club in Leonida changes nothing about a game's classification, because you cannot interact with them as gambling. A working slot machine does, and it forces the adults-only tier, which then triggers the age assurance obligation, which then carries the A$49.5 million exposure. If GTA 6's online mode ships with anything you can place a bet in, Australia is where that decision gets expensive.
There is a second point that most write-ups miss. GTA Online carries its own R18+ classification in Australia, separate from GTA V's, because online modes are classified in their own right. Removing the casino does not lift that classification. So either Rockstar is not finished, or the age assurance system gets switched on before November. What happened this week is the dress rehearsal, and it went the cheap way.
What is not confirmed
Plenty is being asserted right now that has no source behind it, so it is worth separating.
- Rockstar's reason. The company has said nothing. The link to the March 2026 codes is an inference the community drew, and a very reasonable one, but Rockstar has not confirmed it.
- Whether it is permanent. Nobody knows whether this is a removal or a holding position until age verification is ready.
- GTA 6's Australian rating. There is still no confirmed classification. An MA15+ listing from 2023 was pulled by the Classification Board itself as erroneous, because its database accepts public submissions, and a later entry carries content descriptors that contradict its own rating. Anyone telling you GTA 6 is rated MA15+ or R18+ in Australia is reading an unverified record.
- The "you will need a driving licence to play GTA 6" headlines. Those all rest on GTA 6 being classified R18+, which has not happened yet. The obligation attaches to the rating, and the rating does not exist.
- Whether GTA 6 even has gambling. Rockstar has never shown a casino in Leonida.
For context on how differently this is being handled elsewhere, GTA V took its Australian R18+ in 2013 for high-impact drug use rather than violence, and Rockstar's own Red Dead Redemption 2 came in at MA15+ in 2018 with considerably more of it. The classification system is less predictable than the headlines suggest. Our full breakdown of which countries will ask for ID to play GTA 6 online goes through each one.
What to watch
Three things will tell you where this is going. Whether Rockstar activates the dormant age assurance tunable, and which regions appear in it when it does. Whether more features go dark in Australia, because the casino is not the only thing in GTA Online that an R18+ reading could touch. And whether eSafety enforces the codes against a game for the first time, which has not happened yet.
The only live age check touching a GTA game today is on PlayStation in the UK and Ireland, where Sony began verifying accounts through Yoti in June 2026 for chat, parties and user generated content. Games and the store were left alone. That is the shape these things take at first: the platform moves before the publisher does.
