GTA 6 interiors: where the 700 stores figure actually comes from

Every thread about GTA 6 interiors ends up quoting the same line: more than 700 enterable stores, hundreds of malls. It gets repeated as settled fact, usually with no source attached. Rockstar has never published a figure of any kind. Here is where each number actually comes from and how much weight it can carry.
What Rockstar has actually shown
Start with the part that needs no leak. The official screenshots released alongside the second trailer already show building interiors, and they are not empty boxes. There is a clothing store with a service counter, racks of stock, display cases and murals on the walls. There is a packed nightclub. There is a county jail block.

So the existence of interiors is not the open question. The scale is. Nobody outside Rockstar knows how many buildings you will be able to walk into, and the two figures doing the rounds have very different pedigrees.
The 157 figure, and why it is the more grounded one
The older number is 157. It comes from debug code visible in the September 2022 breach, the one Rockstar confirmed was genuine the day after the clips appeared. Data miners going through that material counted references to roughly 157 distinct interior locations, and the accompanying design document is reported to have listed supermarkets, bars and restaurants among the buildings meant to be enterable.
That is the most traceable figure available, and it still needs two caveats. It describes an unfinished development build from 2022, around four years before release. And a reference in debug code is a development artefact, not a shipping feature list. Interiors get added and cut throughout production.
The 700 figure, and where it really comes from
The number everyone quotes is different in kind. It traces back to a forum leaker known as GameRoll, posting in 2025, who claimed more than 700 visitable stores plus hundreds of enterable malls. That same account had called the protagonists' names before Rockstar revealed them, which is why people listen.
A previous hit earns attention. It does not turn an unverified claim into a confirmed one, and the jump from 157 references in a real 2022 build to 700+ in a 2025 forum post is a large escalation that nobody has evidenced. Several sites now present it as established, some of them clearly machine-written, which is how an unsourced number becomes common knowledge.

Supermarkets and hardware stores specifically
These two come up constantly, because they are the everyday buildings GTA 5 turned into scenery. Neither has been shown by Rockstar and neither has been confirmed. The strongest thing that can be said is that the 2022 design document reportedly included supermarkets in its list of enterable building types, and that document is four years old.
The wider frustration behind the question is real, and it is about GTA 5 rather than GTA 6. Los Santos was full of points of interest you could look at and nothing else, which is why the comparison people keep reaching for is Red Dead Redemption 2, a smaller and quieter world with far more doors that open.
The honest summary
Confirmed by Rockstar: interiors exist and have been shown, including retail space. Leaked in 2022 and traceable: around 157 interior references in a development build. Claimed in 2025 and unverified: more than 700 stores. Anyone presenting one of those as the answer is choosing the number they liked best.
