GTA 6 costs €50 in France — can you buy it from abroad?

French retailers have spent the past days undercutting each other on GTA 6, and the result is the first real discount the game has seen anywhere: a box that Rockstar prices at €79.99 has been going for as little as €50. Amazon France matched the cuts at €60 — and has now run out of stock.
Can you buy the cheap French box from another country? No
This is the part being left out of the posts celebrating the price war, and it is the only part that matters if you do not live in France.
The GTA 6 "physical" edition contains no disc. It is a box with a download code inside. And download codes are country-specific: a code sold in France redeems only on an account registered in France. PlayStation's own terms state that voucher codes can only be redeemed on accounts matching the country the code was issued for, and the country on a PSN account is fixed when the account is created. Microsoft is blunter still: Xbox codes are locked to the marketplace they were bought in, and there is no supported way around it.
So the €50 French box is €50 if you are French. Import it to Spain, Germany or the UK and you are holding a code your account cannot redeem.
What actually happened
E.Leclerc broke the recommended retail price first, overnight. Amazon followed, then Auchan, and within hours the French market had a genuine price war on a game that will not ship until 19 November. These were the listings at the time of writing — and in a war like this they move by the hour.
| Retailer | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cdiscount | €50 | The deepest cut: 37% off the recommended price |
| Amazon France | €60 | Sold out — allocation exhausted |
| E.Leclerc | €60 | First to break the price, free in-store delivery |
| Auchan | €60 | Plus a €10 voucher |
| Carrefour | €69.99 | Plus €10 in store credit |
| Fnac | €79.99 | Holding at the recommended price |
| PlayStation Store / Xbox Store | €79.99 | Has not moved and will not |
Why only the box gets cheaper
Look at the last two rows. The digital price is the one thing in that table that never moves, because Rockstar sets it and the platform stores enforce it. A retailer cannot discount the PlayStation Store.
What a retailer can discount is a product on its own shelf. So the boxed edition — a piece of cardboard with a code in it, no disc — has become the only lever anyone has to sell GTA 6 below its recommended price. That is the whole reason the box is worth caring about, and it is why the discounts are showing up at supermarkets rather than on consoles.
A sell-out with nothing to run out of
Amazon France running out of stock reads strangely once you know there is no disc in the box. Nothing was manufactured in short supply. What Amazon exhausted was its allocation of codes from the publisher — the batch of keys it was given for launch.
In other words, the scarcity is contractual, not physical. It says nothing about how many copies exist and everything about how many Amazon was allowed to sell at that price. Treat "sold out" here as a supply-agreement detail, not as evidence of anything about demand — and be sceptical of anyone converting it into a sales figure, which is exactly the trick behind the 50 million pre-orders claim.
What this means if you are not in France
In Spain, the game is still listed at €79.90–€79.99 across Amazon, MediaMarkt and El Corte Inglés. Nobody has blinked. The UK and Germany are the same story. France is, for now, an anomaly — a handful of supermarket chains using a blockbuster as a loss leader to pull customers in.
If you want to pay less and you are not French, importing the box is not the answer. The legitimate route is the one that does not touch your account's country: buying the edition in your own store while paying with PlayStation or Xbox gift cards bought at a discount from a trusted retailer. We keep the working methods, and the ones to avoid, in our guide to buying GTA 6 cheap.
What to watch
- Whether the war crosses the border. Supermarket chains in Spain and Italy have the same incentive; so far none has moved.
- Restocks. Amazon France's allocation ran out, not the game. More codes can be allocated at any time — possibly at a different price.
- The box itself. Rockstar still has not announced a disc version. As long as the physical edition is a code in a box, every "sold out" headline you read means a retailer ran out of keys.
Everything confirmed about what you are actually buying is in our guides to the GTA 6 editions and the release date.
