Splitting this off the mapping thread since it kept derailing over there. So: land border in VI, yes or no, and if yes HOW do they pull it off without it feeling cheap? Especially a mix, part island part land edge, how does that even work in practice?

leaning no. the Gameroll leaks have aged really well and nothing in them points to it. and i just don't see how planes and cars work at a land edge without dragging back the RDR2 invisible sniper that everyone hated
is it even that different from V though. there you clip a hill in a plane, wings gone, splat. do the exact same at a land edge, no bailing, no chute past the line. same trick, different backdrop
no
doubt it. Florida's boxed in by water on three sides so the only real candidate is the north. the Gloriana plates might be a Georgia nod, nobody's sure, but with Kalaga up there you could sell an unclimbable mountain wall like RDR2 did
short version, capable? yes. bothered? no
the aircraft is the real killer, not the ground. stopping a plane is trivial, wings off and done. the nightmare is you'd have to model every hill and town you can see from cruising altitude that you can never actually reach. that's a stupid amount of work for pure backdrop
hard no. it's a stack of problems for nothing. invisible wall, immersion gone. gators one-shotting you, silly. border cops for crossing a STATE line, sillier. an island quietly solves all of it and nobody even notices
functionally i don't see the gap between a land edge and an ocean edge on foot. Witcher 3 does the popup-and-spin-you-around thing and it works fine. the barrier just needs to exist, whatever's painted on it
Witcher 3 does the popup thing
works there because you can only see to the next ridge. give the player a plane and you're suddenly on the hook to render everything to the horizon. i really doubt they lean on miles of fog in 2026, endless water is just way cheaper
keep coming back to this, doing a first-ever land border in the ONE spot that's water on three sides in real life makes zero sense
water on three sides
and the north though ๐
and the north though
which is exactly why the Gloriana thing bugs me. it stretches the map into this long rectangle for what, elevation? Florida already gives you enough for a great map, and if they just wanted hills they could fake them inside a fictional Leonida. bolting a coastal Gloriana on top still leaves you needing a northern coast anyway
and the north though
my bet is a bridge with a leash. Lucia's on an ankle monitor, tons of cars carry Gloriana plates so clearly something crosses, a ferry maybe. it'd actually be neat for her to be unable to leave the state and Jason not leaving her side. push past the bridge and you get a warning, cops pull you before the line. flying's trickier, either a fail screen or some Bermuda-style thing, and we know that's in the game from the leaks
wait they actually put a Bermuda Triangle in?
they actually put a Bermuda Triangle in?
it's in the random events leaks, at minimum as an easter egg. would be a slick boundary too, engine cuts out over a zone, dials spin, you start dropping, maybe you blink back to safe airspace if you handle it right. beats just exploding for no reason
